When someone searches for "landscaper near me" or "carpet cleaning in Leeds", the first thing they usually see is a map with three businesses on it. Those three get most of the calls.

Google decides who appears there using three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You can't move your business closer to every customer, but you can do a lot about the other two.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Business Profile is the listing that appears on the map. Most businesses set it up once and never touch it again, which is exactly why improving yours works.

Choose the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service, "Landscape designer" rather than just "Gardener" if that's what you do. Then add secondary categories for your other services.

Fill in everything

Services, service areas, opening hours, a description, attributes, your website and your booking link. A complete profile tells Google exactly what you do and who you serve.

Add photos regularly

Upload real photos of your work, your team and your vans. Profiles with fresh photos look active, and customers browse them before calling.

Post updates

Google Business Profile posts work like a mini social feed. A post about a finished job, a seasonal offer or a new service every week or two keeps the listing active.

Reviews: the prominence signal you control

The number of reviews, how recent they are and what they say all feed into prominence. They also decide whether people click on you or the next listing.

  • Ask every happy customer. The best moment is right after you finish the job.
  • Make it easy. Send a direct review link by text or WhatsApp.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. It shows you care, and future customers read the replies.

Tip: Save a short message with your review link on your phone, so asking takes ten seconds after every job.

Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them. It breaks Google's policies and can get your listing suspended.

Make your website back it up

Google cross-checks your profile against your website. Help it:

  • Use the same name, address and phone number on your site as on your profile, exactly.
  • Create a page for each main service, explaining what it is and where you offer it.
  • Mention the towns you cover naturally, on pages that are genuinely useful for people in those towns.
  • Make the site fast and mobile-friendly, since most local searches happen on phones.

Get listed in the right places

Consistent listings on other directories (trade bodies, local directories, review sites) reinforce that your business is real and where you say it is. Quality and consistency matter more than quantity.

How long does it take?

It varies with your trade and how competitive your area is. Updating your profile and collecting reviews can show results within weeks for less competitive searches. Bigger towns and busy trades take longer and need steady work over months.

The checklist

  1. Choose the most specific primary category
  2. Complete every field on your profile
  3. Add new photos of your work every month
  4. Post an update every week or two
  5. Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to them all
  6. Match your name, address and phone number everywhere
  7. Give each service its own page on your website
